Closed Form Summation for Classical Distributions: Variations on Theme
De Moivre gave a simple closed form expression for the mean absolute deviation of the binomial distribution. Later authors showed that similar closed form expressions hold for many of the other classical families. We review the history of these identities and extend them to obtain summation formulas for the expectations of all polynomials orthogonal to the constants.

Introduction Beethoven's medical history is available from contemporary sources1'3, since when it has been comprehensively reviewed and reinterpreted4'5. Larkin has recently amended his invaluable account of 19706 and in the light of increasing knowledge of rheumatology and immunology has written in support of the growing impression that many of Beethoven's disorders can be brought together und...

in which each {Fi(n)} is a sequence that satisfies a linear recurrence of degree D(i) < ∞, with constant coefficients. We assume further that the ai’s and the ai + bi’s are all nonnegative integers. We prove that such a sum always has a closed form, in the sense that it evaluates to a linear combination of a finite set of monomials in the values of the sequences {Fi(n)} with coefficients that a...

We show that, when a is equal to a rational multiple of 2k , t...
متن کاملVariations on a theme.
A ring satisfying x = x is necessarily commutative. We consider a variety of weaker forms of this condition and show that many but not all of them imply commutativity. We also present a variety of elementary proofs of the fact that x = x implies commutativity.
